The Last
Movement

A short film by Fynn Prünster & Artur Irmler

Film description

The Last Movement is a narrative short film by Artur Irmler and Fynn Prünster. The film tells the story of an old, successful concert pianist who stands before the last performance of his life. As he performs his concert, memories of his past life and previous mistakes come flooding back. An inner struggle ensues as he recalls all the people he has let down in his career. His music becomes a language and expression of his emotions, while he tries to maintain the facade of an untouchable virtuoso. The film is created as a final project and graduation project as part of our education at the HTBLVA Ortweinschule Graz together with Georg Teibinger and is currently still in post-production.

The Last Movement It is the first major short film by Fynn Prünster and Artur Irmler. The two met during their apprenticeship and have since realized most of their film and media projects together. Most recently, the documentary Projekt Marmor – verdrängt und vergessen, which was broadcasted on ORF and was awarded the Federal Monuments Office’s Memorial Protection Medal.

The Last Movement It was created as part of the joint thesis project by Prünster, Irmler and cameraman Georg Teibinger. The short film formed the practical part of the final project of the five-year training – from the development of the screenplay and directing concepts through to the organization and shooting, to post-production.

In addition, each of the three authors worked on a specific film-related focus in the theoretical part of their thesis. Fynn Prünster focused on creative producing, Artur Irmler on the representation of change in film, while Georg Teibinger dealt with the use of flashback sequences. The thesis was supervised by Franz Leopold Schmelzer and Mag. Therese Seemann.

The development of The Last Movement It began in the summer of 2024 with the idea of telling the last memories of a person at the end of their life. After several revisions, the story of an old, successful concert pianist crystallised in the spring of 2025. By the autumn, the first complete script was created, with the script being revised eleven times before the final version was implemented in the spring of 2026.

Parallel to the script development, Fynn Prünster and Artur Irmler worked on the production, the directing concept, and the visual style of the film. Filming took place in January 2026 in Graz and the Haydnsaal of the Esterházy Castle. In total seven days of shooting took place with a crew of around 30 people. The most important members of the team are listed below. The financing of the film is independent, with a combination of grants, sponsorship, and own funds. In addition, we are trying to close the still open funding gap through crowdfunding via GoFundMe. About the campaign

The completion of The Last Movement is scheduled for November 2026.

Why are we, as young filmmakers, telling the story of an old pianist with remorse? Because we are at the beginning of our own lives and are afraid of ending up just like him after a life full of ambition. This film is a reminder that success means nothing if you sacrifice everything else for it. Although we are still young, we already bring experience and a clear motivation: we want to create films about universal themes that touch us, stir our emotions, and resonate with the audience. Our approach is unconventional. We don’t want to give advice, but to create emotions and atmosphere.

The premiere is expected to take place at an Austrian film festival. In addition, the film has been submitted for international screening at several festivals. We hope for a good response in the international short film scene, especially because the film is devoid of dialogue and therefore works across language and borders.
